Hero Hunters Guide

Hero Hunters is a mobile shooter where you run a team of up to five characters, each with different roles and abilities, and shoot your way through waves of enemies. The game uses a rock-paper-scissors style combat system to determine if you have an advantage or disadvantage with your team: Green (Science) beats Orange (Mechanical) beats Blue (Radioactive) which, in turn, beats Green. There are over forty characters, each with their own traits, skills, and motivations. Characters are unlocked through the Story, PVP, Gauntlet Runs, Co-Op Boss Raids, and special events. There is no need to spend real money to get new characters.Spending money on gold will get you VIP points, which means you ultimately have to spend money in order to get more in-game money through microtransactions. I’m not a fan of this because it punishes players who rarely purchase game currency, giving them far less when purchasing Gold Bars for crates, resetting energy, et cetera. Sure, you get Gold in-game through achievements and daily quests, but it is nowhere near the amount needed for the Hero Chest (which guarantees a 3-star hero or better every time you open one). The gold cost for these chests feels too heavy and punishing for free players.

You put together a team of 1-5 characters and enter a mission. They all have varying amounts of ammo, attack speed, and different abilities (which I’ll cover shortly). You aim with your thumb on the screen, hover over someone, and press the fire button. Enemies are also attacking you at the same time, so you need to be prepared to roll out of huge AOE abilities by swiping left or right to dodge to new cover, or up and down to avoid sniper fire. The enemies have classes and special abilities, and can also spawn as stronger-than-normal Elites. If you aren’t actively using a character, they will act on their own, using their special abilities, opening fire, and dodging as they see fit. The AI is pretty smart about what they use though. Even in auto-play, the team fights smart and safe.  Some of the characters you unlock through the main PVE story, which is awesome. However, they start with no Stars or Rank. As you find shards, you can promote characters (Bronze/Silver/Gold) which gives new abilities and makes them overall just stronger.

Play the campaign mode and go to war with Kurtz’s army. Join an alliance, play epic co-op missions with friends and compete world-wide in real-time online PvP battles. Participate in daily events, gauntlet mode and multiplayer boss raids. There are teammates who are more important to bring because they have heals, break down walls, taunt, or drop AOE attacks. Otherwise these characters add “Power Rating” and use equipment, but they have no traits that really make them special or even useful. Because of this, I have characters on my squad (three at last count) who have no abilities. You can get shards from chests, or from Hard Difficulty stages (which can only be done 3 times a day, unless you reset the stage, which costs Gold). It feels to me like the game is funneling you down the microtransaction path, just in order to make characters worth running. So you either have to grind a lot or spend that money to get random chances at shards. That’s rough to me and feels borderline predatory. The powers are all incredibly useful too, and if you want to excel in PVP, you’re going to need a squad that all bring something to the table.  Collect exclusive heroes, each with their own legendary weapons and special abilities.Play as your favorite hero and dynamically switch between heroes at any time during gameplay. The battle is never over. Watch your hero squad dominate the battlefield.

Hero Hunters is a team-based third-person shooter which utilizes destructible cover elements and takes a page out of the MOBA book with a variety of character classes to play as. One of the coolest features is that you're able to take up to 5 characters into battle at a time and then switch between them on the fly. So, for example, you might have a tanky character blast away some barriers where the enemies are taking cover and then switch over to your sniper to take shots at the now-vulnerable bad guys. Challenge your skills against other players in real-time multiplayer action-packed tactical PvP combat. Craft a tactical squad of up to 5 heroes and dominate the leaderboards and leagues. Join forces with your friends to build an unstoppable military alliance. Beat your rivals in intense time-based event competitions focused on both solo and strategic group play. There are a whopping 40 different types of characters to unlock and play as, of course each with their own unique abilities and strengths and weaknesses. Being able to switch between characters at will is a lot of fun and allows you to kind of develop your own strategies in dealing with the various challenges of the game. There's a full single-player campaign but also real-time PvP battles, co-op battles, PvE boss raids, and more in the online portion. The only down side is that, much like most of Hothead's mobile games, Hero Hunters is free to play'd out the wazoo. It's pretty typical stuff so if you're used to free to play online shooters you'll feel right at home, but if you typically don't enjoy free to play games there's nothing here that's going to change you mind. Even if that's the case though, I'd recommend at least downloading Hero Hunters and playing through the first few missions to see how the player-switching and cover-based shooting works, as it's quite solid and fun.
